Weather Display

A small device that turns live API weather data into a simple readout.

What is this?

This project was created as a gift to my mother. It makes it easy to tell what the weather is like and gives a fun way of showing it. If conditions are suitable for sailing on a given day, the display says so. Otherwise it shows a frowning face.

The weather display showing sailing conditions

How was this made?

  1. An ESP32 makes a request to an open-source weather API
  2. The data is checked to decide if it is a good day to go sailing
  3. The ESP32 drives a display over an SPI bus
  4. The electronics were soldered and fitted into a custom enclosure
The ESP32 wired to the display

This was a one-off gift, so I did not write a technical report about every part of it. If you have questions, feel free to email me. Below is a basic summary of how I completed it.

Design process

  1. Choosing components. The main parts were an ESP32 and a 2.8 inch ILI9341 LCD screen
  2. Writing the code for the ESP32 in MicroPython, for easy data handling
  3. Wiring the ESP32 to the display to debug the code
  4. Using SolidWorks to create a CAD model of the electronics enclosure
  5. Soldering the electronics together to make permanent connections
  6. Assembling the electrical components into the enclosure
